In the vibrant context of North Bondi, this project redefines the traditional semi-detached home with a bold yet respectful contemporary approach.
Sitting beside its original 1920s twin, the new home mirrors the classic gabled silhouette but strips away decorative excess in favour of clean, crafted geometry. The result is a façade that speaks to tradition while forging a new architectural interface to the street.

The brief called for openness, natural light, and a connection to both street and landscape – all typically absent from this housing type – and the client, also the builder, enabled an unusually integrated and experimental process. A restrained, tactile material palette—anchored by timber battens used inside and out – ties the whole together with clarity and warmth.
A central void, topped with operable skylights, brings daylight deep into the home and drives natural ventilation, creating a comfortable interior environment. Sustainability is embedded throughout: solar panels generate all electricity, rainwater tanks supply water, and operable timber screens provide privacy and solar control.

This North Bondi home is both a reinterpretation and a quiet provocation; a study in balance between form and function, craft and innovation, it proposes a new future for the Bondi semi -one that aligns with the progressive values of its neighbourhood while elevating its architectural legacy.
